Databases and Information Services
The business area "Databases and Information Services“ is a classic element of FIZ Karlsruhe’s function as a provider of information. This includes database production as well as the development and operation of science portals in the following subject areas:
- Mathematics and Computer Science
- Crystallography and Chemistry
- Energy
Mathematics is getting increasingly important both as a prerequisite and a tool for achieving innovations and progress in many areas. Mathematical models are used to describe, calculate and validate systems and processes, e.g. in the development of new pharmaceuticals and therapies, the planning of fail-safe power grids, or the optimization of logistic processes. All software tools are based on mathematical knowledge and methods. Quick and easy access to this knowledge is an important precondition for successful research and development.
Computer Science provides the foundation of modern information and knowledge transfer. Our computer science portal io-port.net offers fast, selective and efficient access to scientific publications in computer science worldwide.
Materials science is one of the central sciences and also plays a part in many aspects of everyday life. Newly developed or further developed materials with specific properties result in new products or significant improvements on existing products. Our database ICSD (Inorganic Crystal Structure Database) is an important source for crystallographic information.
The development of new technologies for power generation, the design and construction of modern power supply grids, and solutions for energy-optimized building construction are more important now than ever before. All relevant aspects of Energy Research and Technology are covered by the databases and information services of FIZ Karlsruhe.
